Consistency = success?

Creator of the popular fashion, beauty and lifestyle blog Styling You, Nikki Parkinson gave her perspective on blogging as a business at the most recent online journalism lecture. As a blogger of 7 years, it was interesting to see how she was able to transition from a traditional journalist in a news room to running a blog full-time and profiting from it.

Honestly, what journalist student hasn't started a blog at one point or another over their degree? It's almost like a right of passage

Personally, blogging has always been something I've enjoyed. It's generally a more casual style of writing and you can really showcase who you are on your blog. But after blogging on and off for a couple years my main downfall has always been a lack of consistency.

Which brings me to one of Nikki's tips for successful blogging discussed in the lecture, "Be consistent and persistent".

It makes complete sense. As people we're creatures of habit and if you can create a schedule of when you write and upload, people will know when to expect their news. It's like a TV show with episodes that come out weekly, you know they're coming and when so you set aside time to engage with that content.

Another idea I'd never thought about was posting in the morning. I'd always thought that content uploaded after working hours, around 6 when people are at home would get the most exposure. However Nikki pointed out that posting in the morning allows for full day exposure from commuters reading on the train to late night browsers to all have access to new content.

Overall, that lecture has really given me something to consider and who knows, I may just have to give an old blog another look.
